Museum of Art of Sabadell (MAS)
In 1998, the Museum of Art of Sabadell commissioned us to design the poster, leaflet and exhibition catalogue for “Sabadell a l’aparador del 1929” (“Sabadell at the 1929 showcase”). The exhibition, curated by historian Òscar Carbonell, explained Sabadell’s contribution to the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition: Sala Sabadell, a large space in the textile art pavilion spanning over 500 square metres and exhibiting materials produced by manufacturers in Sabadell. In charge of the design and decoration were local architect Santiago Casulleras Forteza and local artist Antoni Vila Arrufat. For this exhibition, Vila Arrufat created a series of decorative panels in the form of an art deco collage with lettering using the Futura typeface, created by Germany’s Paul Renner in 1927. We were struck by the fact that Sabadell’s artists were fully aware of the new typeface and of German modernism, which we wove into our typographical poster as a small tribute to the local and European avant-garde.
